How we do it at B+W
Investing in the future of engineering
At Bornhorst + Ward, our culture is the foundation of everything we do, guiding not only how we interact day-to-day but also how we approach recruitment and development. Built on the principles of honesty, integrity, and long-term commitment to our customers, staff, and ourselves, our culture enables us to operate with trust rather than strict processes. This trust-based work style fosters collaboration, inclusivity, and innovation, empowering every team member to contribute meaningfully.
Our staff describe our culture as collaborative, determined, friendly, and supportive. We prioritize proactive problem-solving, effective communication, and creating an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered. This culture ensures that even under pressure, we work together to achieve exceptional outcomes while maintaining a strong sense of purpose and shared values.
This cultural foundation drives our recruit and train philosophy. At Bornhorst + Ward, we see recruitment as an investment in the future of engineering and our team. By providing structured training, hands-on project experience, and access to mentorship from experienced professionals, we help undergraduates and graduates build their careers while embodying our core values.
Our approach ensures new talent develops the technical expertise needed to thrive and the collaborative mindset essential to our success. By fostering a supportive and growth-focused environment, we don’t just build individual careers—we strengthen our team and ensure we’re always ready to meet the challenges of the future.

Recruit + Train with B+W!
Grow with us for the long-term
At Bornhorst + Ward, our recruitment and training programs are designed to support early career professionals in building meaningful, long-term careers. Whether you're an undergraduate, graduate, or cadet drafter, we offer clear development pathways that combine practical experience, technical training, and ongoing mentorship.
We invest in training because we value stability, capability, and strong teams. Many of our current team members began their careers with us - as student engineers or cadet drafters - progressing into permanent roles and continuing to grow within the business. We aim to provide the kind of support and experience that encourages people to stay, develop, and build their future here.
We’re looking for motivated, reliable individuals who are ready to learn, contribute, and commit to a professional environment. If you're looking for more than just a short-term placement, and are serious about your development, we’d like to hear from you.
Undergraduate Engineers
Do your paid Student Placement with us!
At Bornhorst + Ward, our Undergraduate Placement Program gives you real-world exposure to civil and structural engineering projects. During your placement, you'll work alongside experienced professionals, gain practical skills, and receive valuable mentorship. This is a great opportunity to apply what you’ve learned at university while contributing to projects that shape our future.
For standout students, the placement often leads to long-term career opportunities. Many undergraduates continue with us in casual roles during semester and, in many cases, transition into full-time roles after graduation.
Graduate Engineers
Join our Graduate Program!
For graduates, you’ll be entrusted with responsibility on a variety of projects that shape the future of Queensland. You’ll receive guidance from an experienced mentor who will help develop your skills and expertise across diverse and impactful projects. Many of our graduate positions are filled by former undergraduates, but we’re always open to applications from passionate engineers eager to start their career with us.
Applications are accepted annually, so if you're ready to start your engineering career with Bornhorst + Ward, we encourage you to submit your cover letter and resume to the below link.
Cadet Drafting Program
Join our Drafting Team!
At Bornhorst + Ward, our Cadet Drafter Program offers early career professionals, whether school leavers or those making a career change, the chance to earn while they learn. You’ll gain hands-on experience on real world projects, supported by senior drafters and engineers, and develop your skills using industry standard software. Many of our cadets also study part time as they build their careers.
Past cadets, like Freya and Josh (featured below), have transitioned into full time roles and advanced to senior positions. Freya, who started as a cadet just a few years ago, now mentors newer team members, highlighting the growth and support we offer.
If you’re detail-oriented, eager to learn, and ready to commit to a career in drafting, we’d love to hear from you.
